I studio logo research Unit 16

We were given a brief to design a logo for Istudio. So I started by reading and understanding the brief so I know what was expected.
I started research by finding out about some information on logos.
A logo is...
A Logo is a design symbolising ones Organization. It is a design that is used by an Organization for its letterhead, advertising material, and signs as an emblem by which the Organization can easily be recognized, also called logotype. Logotype is a graphic representation or symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation, etc., often uniquely designed for ready recognition. (https://www.logobee.com/feature3.htm)( accessed 18th January 2017)

I found out there are several sorts of logo. There are lettermarks, wordmarks, combination marks, emblems and brandmarks.

This logo for No Picnic is a sort of emblem with text on the square shape (a Swedish design company). It has a grey frame to make the inner colours stand out. Inside the grey frame is a red square with white bold text in the middle of it.  This is called reversed out. The design is balanced ; the font is simple with no frills. They look like just lines rather than letters. The letters are created simply, for example the c and the n are the same shape only the c has been rotated. It is a modern style of design.
On Illustrator this design would be simple to create by using the line tool and making each letter. The lines would need to be quite thick. The red background can be made by using the rectangle tool and holding the shift button to make it a square.

Brass agency is a creative content studio from digital gaming, advertisement and films.
Brass agency's is a word mark logo. This is a two dimensional logo.

Colour used plain black with stripes of white to create the lettering. There is no white line exactly the gaps between the black make the lines. The letters are created with simple shapes, for example the b is created with a rectangle and semi circle, they are slightly parted to create a gap.  To make the shapes in Illustrator you could use the ellipse tool to make the circles. Make sure you hold the shift button on the keyboard to make the circles. To make the circles cut in half you would use the knife tool. You will make the letter shapes by dragging the rectangles, circles and semi-circles together. They are aligned along the bottom edge.

Imagination is an agency that transforms business through creativity.
"Imagination"  is a word mark logo. It is a two dimensional logo. Imagination uses sans serif font.
The background has a gradient effect to it. Starts from grey down to black, the background seems to have space, where if someone is able to walk by it.
Colour is a mixture of black, grey and white to create the word "imagination"
As for the style looks very urban. which can attract younger audiences.

Steinias is also a creative content studio from design and social media.
Steinias logo has a style of an emblem. The text of Steinias has a sans serif font and a two dimensional splats. This is an urban looking style logo.

This logo is for veryday (a Swedish industrial design consultancy) has no frame to make the text and logo stand out. The red bold text is enlarged so it stands out. The image on the left of the text (heart) is small and made with three different colours (purple, green, pink), this is because the creater did not want to draw to much attention away from the text.

This logo is for Brody associates (globally renowned, innovative, creative agency specialising in digital, typography and identity). This logo has a black frame that makes the letter in the middle stand out. The letter was created with the shaper tool.

Typographic Hierarchy

Today we looked at typography hierarchy.
I did not know what this referred to before the class.
I found out/the tutor told us, the word hierarchy means something that is ranked according to importance.
The word typography means the style and appearance of printed matter (letterforms, punctuation marks etc).
So putting the two words together, I understand that typographic hierarchy means looking at ways to make some words more important than others.

We were given an Adobe Illustrator file that had four paragraphs of writing on it.
This is what they looked liked. Each paragraph is the same. Our task was to think about ways to make the information more visible. Already you can see there is information separated from the main paragraph. This already shows some typographic hierarchy. But we were asked to think of other ways to make the information more visible.

After a short discussion with the tutor I drew up a list of ideas on how to make the changes needed.
We all agreed that size, weight, colour, position and type contrast could be used to increase importance to some  parts of the paragraphs.

I opened the file in Illustrator and using the type tool I selected from the first paragraph the title line. I then changed the regular font to Bold. This made the line stand out and would probably be the first thing anyone noticed. I also changed the size of the type from 13 points to 15 points to add some emphasis. The date and time lines I also changed to bold.
This is what the changes made looked like. The eye immediately seeks out the bold type. This clearly shows typographic hierarchy.
