Today we looked at typography hierarchy.
I did not know what this referred to before the class.
I found out/the tutor told us, the word hierarchy means something that is ranked according to importance.
The word typography means the style and appearance of printed matter (letterforms, punctuation marks etc).
So putting the two words together, I understand that typographic hierarchy means looking at ways to make some words more important than others.
We were given an Adobe Illustrator file that had four paragraphs of writing on it.
This is what they looked liked. Each paragraph is the same. Our task was to think about ways to make the information more visible. Already you can see there is information separated from the main paragraph. This already shows some typographic hierarchy. But we were asked to think of other ways to make the information more visible.
After a short discussion with the tutor I drew up a list of ideas on how to make the changes needed.
We all agreed that size, weight, colour, position and type contrast could be used to increase importance to some parts of the paragraphs.
I opened the file in Illustrator and using the type tool I selected from the first paragraph the title line. I then changed the regular font to Bold. This made the line stand out and would probably be the first thing anyone noticed. I also changed the size of the type from 13 points to 15 points to add some emphasis. The date and time lines I also changed to bold.
This is what the changes made looked like. The eye immediately seeks out the bold type. This clearly shows typographic hierarchy.

typographic styles (albums)
on the Dizzie album they have used some really cheeky and chunky typography here. It not only illustrate the word but loads it with character and it's great for someone that has personality like Dizzie. the typograhy covers most of the page, its simply drawn with a black stroke and a colour fill. this typography is also used to drawn people in making them curious as to what type of music this album contains.
the Saturdays album and the typography here is really elegant and beautifully crafted. It's much much more feminine than the Dizzie one and it works very well with the fashionesque shoot on the front. the typography is slim and sleek to make it look more stylish to appeal to women, it's also placed at the top of the album so it doesn't overpower the band members. the image of the album is the band sitting down with a dull background wearing bright clothing to make them stand out and attractive.
the Prodigy Dirtchamber sessions. They've used found and found and destress type on the front cover and all the way through the album including the booklet where they've hand scratch all the track names into the booklet. And I think this works really beautifully with the mish mish of music that is on the CD.

Type design can give your words a (1)..voice............... It can really add meaning and enhance the (2)..message................... of your words. For example, on the Dizzie album they have used some really (3)...cheecky................ and chunky typography here. It not only (4)....illustrate....................... the word but loads it with (5)......character...................
and it's great for someone that has personality like Dizzie. In
contrast to this one, I've got the Saturdays album and the typography
here is really (6)........elegant...................... and beautifully crafted. It's much much more (7)........feminine................
than the Dizzie one and it works very well with the fashionesque shoot
on the front. In total contrast to my last two albums, I've got the
Prodigy Dirtchamber sessions. They've used found and (8)....found and destress..................... type on the front cover and all the way through the album including the booklet where they've hand (9).....scratch ................... all the track names into the booklet. And I think this works really beautifully with the (10)....mish mash............................ of music that is on the CD.
